Collection of NS2 Reading Material [Tutorials and Documents] – Wired and Wireless

Hi Folks,

In this post i am posting a sea of (network simulator) NS2 reading material (files and resources) that i have collected over the years. Many of us researchers usually face the problem of finding good reading material on ns2 and usually just type ns2 in Google and hourly browse through hundreds of links that Google shows up. That may prove fruitful although its tiring and agonizing. (I have done that quite a lot now). Also we search for problems being faced by us when we carry out simulations and in the end we find no solutions. (NS2 problems will be like that for many years to come. 😦 ) As far as NS2 is concerned my personal experience is that you are on your own.

This post would somewhat enthrall you and you might eventually like it as it contains lots of reading materials and resources that could be of much help to budding researchers like me in the field of networking. This is just a small effort from my side to the little known NS2 Research Community.

Please leave comments, suggestions, and an encouraging word of thanks in the comments.

hi, i happened to go through one of your papers, NDj-AODV.
    can you guide me as to how exactly we can cache{src addr, bcast id, prev hop addr, hop cnt}
and the use of overhearing mode implementation.if you can post me the code(if you have) , i would really appreciate it.i am a m.tech student at IIT Kanpur doing my final year project. i felt your paper was interesting.my mail id is vensu108@gmail.com.kindly do reply

hi for your paper, NDj-AODV, how do you check that your overheard packet is indeed RREP, i mean other control packets and data packets are also overheard. or is it the case that only RREP is overheard? if so how? how can a node “intelligently” confer within an environment that the packet which it is about to hear is RREP without actually checking it ? please do reply for this , i am almost through with the coding part. please do help me.

The node does not confer. The node overhears all packets in its vicinity. From the many packets it just looks for any RREP packets that are transferred from another intermediate node. you need to refer to the Tap class.

        okay, thanks for your response.
As far as i know, if we use tap we can overhear packets by getting all the packets through mac layer irrespective of thier destn address (hardware addr?) present in the mac header. is that correct?pls ans.
And if the node looks for RREP packets among all overheard packets, i guess it must recognise RREP based on its structure format, am i right? pls ans.

pls ans these two questions, it would be very greatful for me. i would appreciate your reply sir.

i”t only looks for the rrep packets from the many packets”, so does it mean all other packets are not even received by the network layer(just discarded)? And only RREP packets are allowed in the network layer? Do please answer this question. I only need to get some more clarity regarding the concept of overhearing now. nothing else. please please please

hi, in your paper ndj-aodv since rreps are overheard, and the intermediate nodes delete the route to the RREP recipient(next hop) but how do intermediate nodes know the next hop information. I see that there is a common header field in the aodv program (ns2), which uses the next hop information. It is said that this common header is compulsory. But , when we are explaining how good is it to say about the common header used? IP header or udp header does not make use of the next hop information.

As far i understand now, when a node overhears a RREP, the mac layer passes it towards the network layer without filtering based on mac destination address. But, at the network layer, the destiantion ip address in ip header ( dest ip addr in ip header is the RREP next hop addr, and original source and dest addr are present in RREP pkt itself) doesnot match the node’s ip address. So, if that match doesnot take place, CAN the node access the RREP information to verify if its the RREP packet (looking at the “TYPE FIELD” of RREP). we need to verify if its the RREP pkt because then only we can delete the reverse route to RREP’s next hop.

please do reply, i have my thesis defense in 10days. needed this vital info, please please do reply this time. awaiting for your speedy reply.

    sir,
I got all the earlier doubts cleared. I am about to finish my thesis. I needed only one doubt to be solved now. please respond since i need it.

ques- In finding node disjoint paths between a source and destination, there will be no common intermediate nodes for one particular source-destination pair . But can there be a common node present in paths of different source-destination pairs simultaeneously?

I am asking this because node disjointedness means there should be no common node. so i am bit confused. kindly respond sir. I shall not trouble you further. My simulation work is completed and i need to submit my thesis now , so am asking

    hi sir,
i have a question. if have have to set different mobility for the same scenario(topology) in ns2, what should i do?
i tried with the your commands on setdest directory by only varying the speed(-M). It did give a scenario(topology). But i get different topology for new speed values in setdest command. But i want the same topology with different speed, what should i do? please help

In ndj-aodv(where multipaths are used as back up paths), does overhearing mode result in congestion ? Added to that if the routes are used in multipath manner(i.e, simultaeneously) , doesn’t the overhearing mode cause much congestion?

I am asking this because in ndj aodv, all nodes would overhear all packets ( RREQ,data pkts RERR etc) in its vicinity. kindly reply sir , this is a genuine doubt

installing tap class in mac layer sets up the promiscuous mode, but will the overheard packet make its way upto the other upper layers. and how do you delete the reverse route to the RREP destination if the packet doesnot move towards the upper layers, because only the ip header contains the info of the next hop of RREP( since RREP is unicast on a hop by hop basis)

are the intermediate nodes using the mac header info or the ip header info for deleting the reverse route to the rrep destination (next hop of rrep) . just answer this one at least this one please, this is my last question on your paper. Kindly answer this and give me this key info.

for your simulation, did u take an average of 5 to 10 different runs for each data value. or just one run with one scenario( which cant be the case because each time ns2 generates a scenario for a particular speed, it is using a different speed value.). You have not mentioned the number of runs nor the number of scenarios in your paper, ndj-aodv. Please specify it as it would be helpful.

Now, coming to simulation is it possible to generate the same topology for different node speeds. As far as i know, i dont think its possible as each time a scenario is generated using setdest command, it uses a different internally generated seed value. So, no two scenarios can be the same. can you confirm the same.

hi this is my last question to you, kindly reply .
in your paper ndj-aodv, are the intermediate nodes rebroadcasting the duplicate RREQs or just recording the information of duplicate RREQs. This is not properly mentioned in the paper. So, kindly clarify and thats it. bye

    hi sir,
kindly respond my only doubt remains whether the type field of the RREP pkt can be accessed (or read) even though the destination ip addr in ip header doesnot match with the node’s ip address(this happens at the network layer). I am asking this because the RREP info is present after ip header(as is the case in ns2 simulator).

But, I feel that since the RREP is a routing layer pkt , its type field can be accessed (read) by the network layer to check if the overheard packet is RREP or not and then perform relevant operation. I need your opinion on this to confirm the same.

My work is on comparision of different multipath algorithms , so i need the verification for the same.
